Learn more about Shute Barton here
Shute Barton is a Medieval House with with royal connections.
The word ‘Barton’ means farmhouse. The Bonvilles built the earliest surviving part of the house in the mid-15th century. Thereafter it was rebuilt and improved until the late 18th century. Shute Barton was given to the National Trust in 1959 by the Carew Pole family. Up until 2010 it was still occupied by members of the family.
Today Shute is recognised as one of the more important surviving non-fortified manor houses of the Middle Ages. After a major restoration project it became a holiday home but is open four weekends a year to visitors for guided tours.
Just one mile from Andrewshayes, it is very interesting to visit and the guided tours are excellent. You can discover the great kitchen containing what is believed to be the largest fireplace in England and the attic room with its amazing medieval roof structure.
